Screening, Suitability and Safety in FDR and Elder Mediation: Working with people who use Family Violence

Presenter: Joanne Law

Working effectively and safely in mediation requires a strong understanding of family violence dynamics, risk indicators, and appropriate practitioner responses. This session is designed to support mediators to build confidence and capability when navigating complex and high-risk situations.

Participants will strengthen their family violence screening skills within mediation contexts, including identifying indicators of coercive control and assessing levels of risk. The session will also explore how to determine when mediation may be unsuitable, or when adaptations are required to support safe and ethical practice.

In addition, participants will develop a clearer understanding of safe and appropriate responses when working with people who use violence, alongside key considerations in elder mediation, including recognising and responding to risks of elder abuse.

This session provides practical guidance, applied insight, and an opportunity to reflect on best practice approaches to safety in mediation.
