When the Dust Settles: Emotional Literacy and Early Recognition of Risk

Presenter: The Outback Mind Foundation - Aaron Schultz

For mediators and Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners, the ability to recognise, understand, and respond to emotional dynamics is central to effective practice. This session explores how emotional literacy shapes client engagement, supports constructive communication, and influences outcomes in mediation and dispute resolution settings.

Presented by the Outback Mind Foundation, the session focuses on strengthening emotional awareness and resilience for both practitioners and the clients they support, particularly in complex and high-stress situations.

Participants will be introduced to practical approaches that support applying emotional awareness as a key skill in managing conflict and de-escalating tension, leading to safer and more effective processes. The session includes a 20-minute documentary screening, featuring When the Dust Settles (trailer), offering insight into the lived experiences of men and families in regional Australia, including mental health challenges, suicide, and domestic violence.
