Same Skills, Different Law: Why FDR Parenting Mediation Is Not ‘Just Mediation’

Presenter: Joanne Law

This webinar is designed for AMDRAS accredited mediators, current Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) students, and practising FDR professionals working with separated parents.

Many mediators are now being asked to run parenting mediation, but it is not always clear when standard mediation is appropriate, and when a formal FDR process is legally required. This session will help you understand the difference and why it matters.

You will gain practical clarity on:

  • When parenting matters fall under general mediation, and when FDR rules apply
  • The legal and ethical responsibilities that come with FDR practice
  • The child focused and safety obligations under the Family Law Act 1975
  • The risks of blurred boundaries between mediation and FDR work

For FDR students, the webinar also directly supports key learning areas, showing how family law, child-focused decision-making and safety responsibilities apply in real professional practice.

By the end of the session, you will feel more confident explaining what FDR Parenting Mediation is (and is not), recognising when specialist skills and accreditation are required and working lawfully and safely within the family law system.
